Palace founder Lev Tanju just bagged a creative director role in Milan

The streetwear designer is heading to the Italian fashion capital for a brand new gig, plus more news you missed this week

Since its launch in 2009, Palace Skateboards has revolutionised the streetwear market with canny pop culture references, off-beat marketing strategies, and a general ability to not take itself too seriously. Now, it seems the approach has paid off, as founder Lev Tanju has just bagged himself a shiny new creative directorship. This week, Fila announced that Tanju would be heading up its Fila+ label, a brand new “elevated” line by the Italian sportswear company. In a statement, Fila’s global brand president Todd Klein celebrated the appointment, saying that the company was “thrilled to welcome Lev,” and that his “forward-thinking approach is aligned with our mission to innovate while honouring Fila’s legacy as a premium sports brand.” Tanju also echoed those sentiments, saying in the same statement that, “Italy stands for all things stylish… and I want Fila’s rich Italian heritage to be at the heart of Fila+.”

By way of honouring this legacy, the Fila+ studio will be based in Milan, with Tanju splitting his time between Italy and London, where he’ll remain creative director of Palace. While he might’ve already had his hands full, we can see why Fila tapped the designer to front their new upmarket offering, after successful collabs with Moschino, Gucci and Polo Ralph Lauren. Opening its own dedicated luxury label also feels like the next obvious step for Fila, which released a Glenn Martens-designed Y/Project collab in 2021, and debuted a Haider Ackermann collection in 2022 as part of a brand refresh. And while Fila+ has already been shown to buyers privately during Paris Fashion Week Men’s, us plebs will have to wait ‘til the official reveal in June before we can see what Tanju has up his sleeve.
